Center for Strategic Studies

Internships

Overview

The Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies employs 4-5 unpaid, undergraduate interns each semester to assist with seminar planning and execution, aid in faculty research, and help with necessary day-to-day Center tasks. Interns will work with NESA faculty, staff and participants on a variety of engaging tasks.

Our commitment is to provide a 50% academic / 50% administrative learning environment where undergraduates discover the complexities of working in a government office, speak with professionals within various fields, interact with participants from the NESA region, and gain extensive experience in a fast-paced office. Interns report directly to and are evaluated by the Intern Affairs Coordinator, but work with multiple staff members, including the Director of the Center. All interns are expected to work with both faculty and staff.

Interns primarily assist with program coordination, participant affairs, and outreach activities. This includes tasks related to seminar preparation, such as drafting and production of background material, diplomatic correspondence, event logistics, research and internet searches. Importantly, interns serve as liaisons with seminar participants who represent 25 different countries from the NESA region. In addition, interns act as rapporteurs and faculty assistants for small group discussion sessions and as facilitators during a strategic exercise.

Interns typically fulfill a requirement of 35-40 hours of work per week. The NESA Center internship is unpaid, yet interns can receive a full semester of credit at their host university in addition to gaining invaluable experience working in a government office.
